VB News - Leddy Joins Growing List of VB Teachers Receiving HancockREADS Grants

Van Buren Local School District is proud to announce that Mrs. Alyssa Leddy, high school Spanish teacher, has been awarded a $700 HancockREADS grant from The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation.

This grant will be used to develop a leveled Spanish classroom library for all high school students enrolled in Spanish courses. Free Voluntary Reading (FVR) will provide students the opportunity to read texts that are interesting to them at their own level in the target language.

As a result of this project, Mrs. Leddy expects to see an increase in students’ fluency, vocabulary, confidence, and, hopefully, passion for reading. This project supports the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce World Language Standard of Interpretive Communication, which states that learners will "understand the main idea and related information from connected sentences and short paragraphs in authentic informational and fictional texts and overheard or observed conversations.”

Leddy joins middle school teachers Mrs. Karen Dishong and Mr. Adam Greer as HancockREADS grant recipients this year.

This HancockREADS grant exemplifies the Foundation’s commitment to supporting education and literacy, helping students gain essential skills that will serve them throughout their academic journeys and beyond.
